Abstract. This thesis explores the current process of designing typefaces for Devanagari, a script used to write several languages in India and Nepal. The typographical needs of the script have been insufficiently met through history and many Devanagari typefaces are poorly designed.These were born in the late 18th century. The Italian type designer Giambattista Bodoni is one of the most prominent figures related to this type of font. These typefaces have abrupt and dramatic contrast between thin and thick strokes.
