Devotion and Ancients oaths break differently from what I can tell. There might be a random element, but it might also be a "what dialogue options you chose" factor. (i.e., lying outright vs lying via omission). I broke my Ancients oath by raising the husband at the Hag, since it was necromancy and there's a whole thing about being anti-necromancy.It's possible that it was someone else with the same condition.
